Although I have travelled to quite a few countries, there are still quite a few I would like to explore. Having travelled to Florida on many occasions and enjoyed all there is to do in the theme parks, I can’t help but feel weary when I get home because the holiday has been so hectic!  

I have some friends who pay a visit every year to the Caribbean. They enjoy Christmas at home, but once this is finished, their bags are swiftly packed and off they go for their 2 week’s all inclusive hotel break. It sounds perfect to me, where better a destination to be in the gloomy winter months than the Caribbean where you will be blessed with the sun shining and the daytime temperature holding at a steady 25 degrees.  Of course the fact that the locals are well known for their wonderful hospitality really helps.

Although for some I know it’s all about just taking it easy on the beach whilst ensuring you get a brilliant suntan. There are heaps of different activities you could try whilst on a Caribbean vacation. Isn’t it time you tried your hand at something completely different? Can you imagine being able to try your hand at snorkelling in the beautiful clear turquoise waters with the added bonus of all those beautiful tropical fish swimming around you. It sounds fantastically idyllic. 

I have heard that Caribbean Spa Holidays are a real favourite with us Brits.  Of course we have spa hotels in England, but given the choice, I think the Caribbean would win it for me every time.   Give me a bit of sunshine and a glass of rum, and I’m more than happy.

It is said that a certain Senor Juan de Ayolas sailed the Paraguay river for many months searching for a way to get to the silver mines of Bolivia. Unfortunately he was killed by the Payagua on his return trip. Juan de Salazar was then dispatched to look for him (in vain). In August 1537 De Salazar visited the location of the present-day Asuncion and made the decision to found a fort there. He called it Nuestra Senora de la Asuncion.

It wasn’t long after the erection of the fort that word got out and it soon became an important base to explore from – both Bolivia’s Santa Cruz and Argentina’s Buenos Aires were founded by expeditions that left from Asuncion. Hence the name “the mother of cities”.

The old part of the city which contains the harbor is strategically perched on the bank of the Paraguay River. A natural bay permits small vessels to come and go to their various destinations, one of which is Brazil.

For those who love charm and character – this part of the city offers it in abundance. It has an assortment of beautifully restored colonial buildings as well as some art nouveau architecture. A short trip down Palma (the main street) will introduce you to many of the delights of Asuncion: you will no doubt be approached by one or more vendors selling chipa – the delicious Paraguayan bread made from corn flour or manioc; you will also no doubt hear traditional Paraguayan harp music emerging from the doorways of various stores and everywhere you will be able to buy the Nanduti lace for which Paraguay is famous.

If you stay at the characterful old Hotel Armele, you will be able to watch the sun go down over the Bay of Asuncion and the Chaco stretching far, far away into the distance.

Because of it’s heat in the summer months, the locals tend to frequent its many restaurants, bars, night clubs and open air festivals at night. Paraguayans love music and sing spontaneously in the streets. It’s not strange to hear a group of people walking and singing their favorite songs.

The eastern part of the city, especially Villa Morra, forms the new face of Asuncion. Here you will find numerous shopping malls with all the latest movies and international take-away restaurants. You will also find the modern and sophisticated concert hall built by the National Bank of Paraguay where the Asuncion symphony orchestra and other artists regularly perform.

Asuncion has hotels in all price ranges. The cheaper ones tend to center around Plaza Uruguay. There are several five star hotels in the vicinity of Plaza de los Heroes.

I came across some people who just wanted the time off work, and mumbled incessantly. This is the best answer I got, and can understand what people mean by this. If you really need to get away from your job that bad you are willing to spend your hard earned wages on a ridiculously expensive holiday, then I think you may be in the wrong job!

When we get to that day of the week, what is it called, oh yeah; Friday, is the weekend not time off work? Now I then asked others why they wanted to go and they said (in the extreme minority) that they wanted to meet new cultures. Finally an answer that sounded like they actually knew what they were doing, and why they wanted to go. I can understand that some people would be willing to spend money to experience a new way of life.

What really riled me was the answer that some people gave that read like this; “There isn’t much else around for us to do”! Well, those people i just say “GRRRR”. How can you say there isn’t anything better, you what, excuse me that makes no sense! These people do hurt my brain a bit, and I had to sit down for a while after speaking to them.

But really, do we NEED a reason to go on holiday? No of course you don’t, it’s your money, and you deserve to spend it how you see fit. Make sure that you don’t get told something different.

Very nice place , but unless you are staying at the hotel you are limited to activities at the resort. Our next stop was St. Thomas. We took our own taxi ($10 for both of us each way) and visited Coki Beach. Amazing snokerling at this beach. Buy some dog biscuits from the vendors there and watch the hundreds off fish gather around. We then ported at St. Martin. We also took our own taxi there for the same price and visited Dawn beach. Snorkeling was okay, but the ocean and beach were amazing. We also ate some good BBQ ribs there.

After a full day of fun, enjoy an elegant meal in the Empire Restaurant or relax with casual dinner in La Playa Grille. You many even want to celebrate a special night out in the intimate Nouveau Supper Club. 10.  Cheapest: CAMBODIA

Travel guides have advised their readers to go to Thailand for years because it’s a cheap travel destination.   Subsequently, swarms of backpackers, then tourists, congested the shit out of Bangkok.  For this reason, we say forget Thailand and go to Cambodia before it gets tourist trapped.  Although getting to Cambodia will cost you some cash (about $1000), once you’re in, you will feel like a millionaire.  Since bargaining is common practice in most of Southeast Asia, it is said that you should aim for getting whatever you want for half of what people initially offer.  Just to give you an idea:  a pack of cigarettes is 20 to 25 cents.  Breakfast: about $1.  Hostels run $5 per day (if you get ritzy, a nice hotel is $15-$30 per day).   The most expensive thing you should encounter is the entrance fee to the Angkor Temples (about $20 per day).  These ancient ruins are not to be missed and will be worth spending a few dollars on.  

9.  Most Nature Filled: BOLIVIA

Everyone was exposed to the natural beauty of New Zealand following the release of Lord of the Rings.  Yes, it is very green, lush and mind-blowing.  But in the same vein, it’s also incredibly expensive to get to ($1400-$1800).  Instead, feast your eyes on Bolivia.  With no compromises in the natural beauty department (c’mon it’s in the Amazon), and a huge price cut ($800 roundtrip), Bolivia offers backpackers some amazing nature-related perks.   This place has salt flats, sand dunes, zip lines, exotic animals and plants, incredible rolling green hills and enough ancient ruins to overload your senses into oblivion.  Go get your Amazon on (bring bug spray).  

8.  Hottest Locals: BRAZIL

With so many beautiful people in the world, how do we pick just one place as the home of all that’s hot? Easy: Nakedness that’s how.   Home of the Brazilian wax (necessary if all you’re wearing is body paint), Brazil offers up some incredibly sexy locals.  Although the nakedness is at full force during Carnival (February) when Rio is torn apart by women wearing nothing but body paint and feathers, the best time to see the local hotties is in June during the Boi Bumba Festival.  Fear not, the same nakedness is in store but minus the insane crowds that Carnival attracts.  This annual festival takes place in Parintins (a small river community in northern Brazil) and is based on a legend about killing a bull and eating his tongue.  Dancers are designated as various characters in the festival, each wearing very little and shaking their endowments all over the place. 

7.  Great Nightlife: ICELAND

With Ibiza dying out, Tokyo becoming increasingly expensive and Amsterdam (well it’s still a party if you don’t turn into a lazy stoner during your visit) we turn to Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, for insane nightlife.  The nights are longer here which means the parties last and last.  The girls and guys are hot, the temperature is cold, so dancing, drinking and debauchery are all accepted forms of keeping warm.  Plan a trip for new years to get the best of the Icelandic party experience (fireworks and all).  

6.  Relaxing Beaches: PANAMA (The San Blas Islands)

The world is over 70% water, that water is usually connected to land by beach.  With so many beaches to choose from, how does one place stand out from the rest?  The perfect beach must have all of the following:  soft clean sand, clear water, a fair amount of nakedness, natural surrounding beauty and as few tourists as possible.  As many beaches as there are in the world that fit this description, very few can offer the seclusion from tourists necessary to have a perfect beachgoing experience.   We think the San Blas Islands near the coast of Panama come the closest.  San Blas, inhabited by the Kuna Indians, offers that little bit of seclusion that tourism has yet to ruin.  Women dress in handmade molas (beautifully colorful fabrics), everyone has a natural sun glow tan and fresh fish is caught daily by locals in handmade kayak boats.  Get your beach skimpies on and head out to Cartegena, Colombia where you can catch a boat for $300 to the San Blas Islands.  The fee includes a 5 day, all-inclusive stay in beach paradise.  Can’t argue with that.

5.  Historical sightseeing: ITALY

Though not a very off-track destination, Italy has so much to offer historically.  Rome is home to the Vatican, Pantheon and Coliseum; Florence to the statue of David and then there’s that leaning tower in Pisa.  From Sicily to Milan, ancient Roman ruins are sprawled out in this land of history for you to see.   Genoa is the proud home of Christopher Colombus and the roots of pizza lie in Naples.  Every corner of Italy will have your camera in overdrive.  So read up on Italian historical events and head out to explore the land your history books only vaguely succeeded in describing. 

4.  Best Art Scene: BARCELONA

Italy has the best classical art scene.  But when the same naked figures, realistic religious scenes and landscapes get boring, drop Italy and cruise over to Barcelona to refresh your artistic eye.   Two greats, Salvador Dali and Antonio Gaudi , rule Barcelona’s art culture.  Both are pioneers of surrealism in painting (Dali) and architecture (Gaudi) and their art kicks ass.  More than being visually orgasmic (Dali Painting, Gaudi’s La Sagrada Familia), surrealism opened the door to a whole new world of art that Barcelona continues to redefine; a world where former rules of “fine art” are bent and distorted.  Although some stuffy, snotty, overpriced art galleries do exist here, it’s easy to find your art fix on the streets of Barcelona.  Gaudi’s trippy buildings are scattered throughout the city and the museum of Dali is only a 40 minute scenic train ride north to Figueras.  If these guys don’t tickle you pickle, Barcelona is also packed with more thought-provoking graffiti than you can imagine, inspiring street performers and tons of off-beat artistic expressions.

3.  Most Remote: LAMU

In our world of “been there, done that”, very few places can still be considered “remote”.   Most regions in the world have been taken over by luxury hotels and tourist traps.  It’s hard to set foot on land that is truly remote.  On that note, OTP brings you Lamu.  Off the coast of Kenya, the Lamu archipelago is the oldest inhabited settlement south of the Sahara, its inhabitants are still largely Muslim and here, deserted beaches are still a reality.  Whereas most places in the world are locally navigatable by train, car, bus or at least moped, Lamu’s locals get around on donkeys ONLY (now that’s some serious remoteness).

Although these areas are quite difficult to get into, once you’re in the Himalayas will quench your thirst for adventure.  Hiking these peaks isn’t for pussies.  The elevation gets painfully high and the trek becomes difficult but if you can grow a pair, this destination offers the adventure of a lifetime.  Hikes through the Himalayas are laced with spiritual hilltop villages, Buddhist temples and monasteries (where you can actually stay with monks and experience their peaceful way of life).    A hike through the Himalayas not only awakens your physical sense of adventure but also connects you to a spiritual world unlike any other.

1.  Overall: COLOMBIA

Our number one spot goes to a destination that embodies all the qualities of our top 2010 spots and, to spice it up, adds a little danger into the mix.  A long-time “no go” zone for Americans, Colombia is 2010’s hottest backpacking destination.  It’s cheap as hell (1100 pesos, or $0.43 for a beer), has beautiful locals (Shakira, case closed), incredible artists (Botero: the fat man that does fat art) and remote beaches (how does sleeping in a hammock hostel sound?).  The danger element comes from rumors of American kidnappings and drug wars.  Although in larger cities like Bogota, backpackers are advised to stay in at night, smaller places like Cartegena and Taganga are relatively safe at nightfall.  Besides, a little danger always makes for a good time in paradise.

Whether it’s nature, art, history, hotties or beaches you seek, the above spots will satisfy whatever your craving may be in 2010.  Don’t be afraid to get a little off track this year; drunken Cancun will still be around in 2011.

Booze is our escape from the reason and logic bestowed on us by the powers that be.   From Pabst to top shelf black labels of this and that, we all have our stories of drinking, getting drunk and getting retarded. We have all done the keg house parties, jungle juice gatherings and endless shot for shot competitions.  At this point, we bet your liver is begging you to stop drinking that purple drank but before you give in to its pleas, let us show you how to booze it up just a little more;  this time with style and worldly culture.  Here’s a lucky list of 7 traditional drinks around the world (and 3 complimenting hangover cures).

Caipirinha (lime wedges, granulated sugar and Sagatiba Pura)

Acclaimed as the national drink of Brazil, this sugary cocktail contains cachaca, a rum-like liquor with a sad, but true, history.  Brought over by Portuguese settlers, cachaca was given to slaves to increase productivity (seems counter-productive but sure why not?).   After slavery was outlawed in 1888, all Brazilians began whipping these suckers up for themselves to enjoy.  The Caipirinha pairs well with a white linen shirt, coconutty sunscreen and a lay on a warm Brazilian beach.

Sangria (bottle of wine, sliced fruit, honey, triple sec and a big pitcher)

The jungle juice of Spain, this beverage is traditionally enjoyed in groups (hence the pitcher).  Since wine in Spain is insanely cheap (we’re talking less than a dollar per bottle, even cheaper for a box if you’re really scrounging), this drink is quite popular among the backpacking elite.  The type of wine used and the fruit thrown inside vary regionally, with the red (“sangre” or “blood” in Spanish) version being the most popular.

The “single” part means only one grain (barley) is used.  To “malt” means to distill in an oak cask.  The “scotch” part, well that’s the most important.  Single malt scotch is ONLY considered such if it is made in Scotland and aged for no less than three years.  If you’re man (woman) enough, we dare you to gather up some hostelmates and go on one of these distillery tours.  Pricing is specific to your group’s size and preferences.  The tour includes a designated driver.  One thing for sure, all of you will leave smelling like drunken Scotsmen (and women).

Elephant’s Ear (Marula Tree Juice, Mangos for garnish)

The presentation of this one is the key.  A South African classic, this drink is traditionally served with two ear-shaped dried mango pieces attached to your glass.  Why elephants? The symbolism lies in that various animals, including elephants, eat the fruit of the Marula tree regularly.  The tree bears fruit with a high alcoholic content which often makes the animals drunk as hell.  We don’t know how you feel, but we think this guy needs to go to AAA (animal alcoholics anonymous) pronto.

The Pisco Sour (Pisco, lime juice, egg whites, simple syrup and bitters)

You put “sour” after any word and it sounds like you have drink ordering authority; it’s very James Bondish.   This Peruvian drink wields so much power that it has a national holiday (National Pisco Sour Day happens the first Saturday of February).  Mostly a great excuse to get the entire nation drunk, this holiday celebrates the concoction and its rebellious origins.  In the 1700s, Spanish colonialists brought the grape to Peru.  During that time, making wine was prohibited.  People came up with prohibition era uses for grapes that weren’t quite wine but still had a high enough alcoholic content to keep people happily intoxicated.  Pisco (a brandy-like grape liquor) was born and became Peru’s local drink of choice.

Samagonka (ingredients: the devil and his friends)

Russians drink vodka, not a big surprise and this type of vodka is the most authentic of all.  Forget Absolute and Stolichnaya, Samagonka is the general name for vodka that has been distilled in a basement . . . at home . . . from potatoes.  Most retailers in Russia will not carry it, so to get a taste you have to put your social skills to work.  Old Russian men will always have at least a liter of this stuff sitting around.  Befriend one and you will be taking shots with the pros (and chasing those shots with pickles and cold cuts) in no time.  If you get really friendly, please refer to the conveniently provided hangover cures at the end of this article.   

Mojito (Mint, Rum, Sugar, Lime and Soda)

Cubans are brilliant!  Their national cocktail is both a breath-freshener (all that mint) and a panty-dropper (inhibitions cannot withstand this sweet liquid rum candy).  We hail it the perfect hook-up drink.  The name has been rumored to mean two different things.  One interpretation comes from the Spanish word for “a little wet” (well that’s suggestive) and the other is from an African word for “a little spell”.  Either way, we’re pretty sure the mojito is how Ricky got Lucy.

3 HANGOVER CURES…

Bloody Mary  (shot of vodka, tomato juice, celery stick, squeeze of lemon, few shakes of cayenne pepper)

A drink to cure a hangover? Can’t be true.  The infamous breakfast Bloody Mary contains tomato juice which is rumored to dilute the ouchy effects of a bad hangover (the spicy cayenne is there to kick you in the balls so you reconsider overdrinking next time).  Invented by a French guy in New York, this drink combines the tomato and “hair of the dog” hangover cures and is sure to have you on your way to recovery (or perpetual drunken ‘I don’t give a shit’ world).

Sleep

Need to get from Brazil (where you had one too many Caipirinhas) to Peru (to celebrate National Pisco Sour Day)?  Book the longest red-eye bus ride available.  This way, not only are you saving money by taking the turtle route, you sleep the entire time and the hangover becomes yesterday’s news.  Employ these safety techniques while you snooze the booze away and you’ll be golden.

Hydrate

Hard to do when alcohol is safer than water in third world countries but a must to cure your dehydrated partied-out self.  Most bottled water is fine so buy in bulk and drink at least 16 oz before going to bed post-party.  This is also a great time to whip out those water-purifying tablets we told you about.  Stay moist friends.

Between the cheap beers and boxed wine, that random jungle juice and straight shots, give these traditional drinks a try in their countries of origin.  Chances are their American versions pale in comparison and you get no bragging rights for drinking mojitos at your local boozery (like you would if you had one on a beach in Copacabana).

Sometimes, some of the stuff we have in our hand-carry luggage are not allowed onboard the plane, and then either we have to get rid of them, or (again *sigh*), have our luggage checked in.

Before we lose our temper and get irritated by these kinds of troubles, it is wise to check with our specific airline regarding their carry-on luggage policy, including items that are allowed inside the plane.

With each airline, there are some guidelines that we need to follow in order for our hand-carry luggage to be allowed aboard the plane. Generally speaking however, the usual size of carry-on luggage allowed is approximately twenty-two by fourteen by nine inches. Anything exceeding this must be checked in.

Some luggage stores may insist that the sizes of their carry-on bags are the exact dimensions that airlines have specified. While this may be true, it is a good idea to measure the bags ourself, just to make sure that we are buying a correct-sized carry-on bag, instead being told later that they are too big for carrying on the airplane.

The shape of our hand-carry luggage is the other thing that we have to consider. Unfortunately, even if we have the appropriate total size of the allowable carry-on luggage which is 45 inches; if it is irregularly shaped, it could still find itself in the checked in compartment of the plane.

Finally, we have to check with our airlines on the items that are allowed to be carried on the plane; and the items that we can still carry onboard without being added as part of our hand-carry luggage. These items include jackets, child seats, and umbrellas, among other things.
