Some cringed in disbelief, some turned up their noses, but deep down, I think everyone loved the retro era - they must have, it keeps coming back. The re-emergence of fashions and styles that disappeared years ago is now being touted as the latest in thing. In fact, one of interior furnishings mainstays throughout the eras has been the humble lamp and while bench surfaces, chairs, lounges and most other room items have gone through drastic changes, many of the vintage retro lamps that emerged in the 1950s and 60s are popular today.

It’s the fun and daring lines and color combinations that gives the retro style tremendous appeal allowing you to let go of your inhibitions and go for it. Floor lamps such as the subdued square drum-shaped lampshade on a ceramic base or the classic Arco floor lamp that is the centrepiece of any modern retro style and will look appropriate in any modern retro room. The cone lamps pointing in different angles from a central pole…and all of the light shades of different colors, they define the retro style in my mind. You can make the retro lamp shade as funky as you like with a choice of trimmings, tassels or prints or a combination of all three.

There is a vast difference in styles of lamps yet still sitting squarely as coming from the retro era. From the traditional drum lamp shades to the more space-age lamps that made use of the newest and modern materials you aren’t short of choice. New products such as melamine spattered with chrome and designs that were sleek and sophisticated combined to produce a very forward thinking look.

Choosing to buy a vintage retro lamp opens up the diverse color combinations that were in vogue at the time. Mixing burnt orange with avocado green doesn’t seem so bad when you can explain it as being part of the retro style. Whether you want to buy retro table lamps or retro floor lamps, there is a widening range once again.
