Meditation is a way of getting familiar with your spiritual side. It is actually the union of your mind, body and spirit. As a society, we have moved far beyond our spiritual sides and it’s time to get back to building this side of us up. After all, our spirituality is one of things that separate us from the animals. But how to meditate properly is the question most people ask. It turns out that meditation can be performed in a variety of ways. There are many meditation methods and the best advice to give someone who’s not used to meditating is to do whatever works best.

Close Your Eyes

To begin any meditation method, you must learn how to close your eyes and block out the external world. Distractions such as dogs barking outside, lawn mowers, the television and other noises can break you out of a meditative state so these must be blocked if you’re going to meditate properly. Blocking out these types of noises can be done in a variety of ways. You can play soothing music, you can play one of those noise makers that plays sounds such as the rain or you can drown out outside noise by repeating a mantra.

Mantras

Using mantras is one of the meditation methods that include repeating a word or sound over and over to induce a meditative state. This can be a simple OM sound or it can be a phrase, such as, “I am relaxing”. Using this meditation method is very popular as it not only drowns out outside noise but it also allows you to clear your mind as you focus on the word or phrase spoken.

Clear Your Mind

In order to meditate properly, no matter what meditation method you choose, make sure you clear your mind. You can’t meditate if you’re worried about work, or family, or your financial status. In the world of meditation, none of this matters. Meditating is about becoming one with your spiritual self and to get in touch with that side you must dissolve physical reality. That’s the point of all of these meditation methods you may hear about. They are about shutting out the physical world so that you can escape into your subconscious and become one with your spiritual reality.

Whatever meditation method you choose, you should know that meditation has many benefits. Meditation can heal you, both physically and mentally, it can energize you, it can calm and relax you and, above all, the various meditation methods can help you find enlightenment in these very troubling and tumultuous times in which we live.
