Single state snow throwers use an auger assembly which spins at a high speed to collect snow from the ground and throw it out a discharge chute.

The spinning auger makes contact with the area to be cleared and pushes the machine in a forward direction. This makes it easy to push the machine forward although the machine operator will still need to steer.

Since it makes contact with the ground it works best on smooth surfaces. Some models of single stage snow thrower will have multi directional discharge chutes which enable you to aim them in a particular direction.

With a dual snow thrower you will have a spinning impeller which is situated behind the snow collection auger. The impeller functions just like a pump that pulls the collected snow from the main auger and push it out the discharge chute with enhanced force. This allows it to throw the snow a greater distance and handle deeper snow.

Two stage snow throwers feature adjustable metal plates which enable you to set the clearing height for the machine. This allows you to use them on a variety of surfaces. When using a snow thrower it is important that you follow the basic safety guidelines for that machine.

Never try and unclog a snow thrower while it is operating or point the discharge chute at a bystander. All to often there are solid items beneath the snow which can cause significant damage.
