Insomnia affects thousands of people every single year. Sometimes people will experience an acute form of insomnia, but there are many people that have to deal with nighttimes full of chronic insomnia. Treatment can work, whether you decide to try certain techniques, over the counter medicine, of prescription drugs to combat it.
Knowing The Signs
The treatment for insomnia begins with knowing the signs of insomnia. If you experience a lot of restless sleep, poor quality of sleep, or have difficulty in falling or staying asleep, then you are experiencing insomnia. The cause of insomnia varies from person to person, but some of the more common causes are certain medications, depression, stress, jet lag, and use or abuse of stimulants, alcohol, or other illicit drugs. There are many different ways you can get treatment for insomnia, depending on the severity of your condition. For most, a regular pattern of sleep along with proper exercise, relaxation techniques and avoidance of stimulants such as caffeine can help. For others, the problem is more serious and may require the use of medication.
Prescription Treatment For Insomnia
If natural treatments for insomnia have not worked for you, then your next option is a prescription treatment for insomnia. Most prescriptions are not meant to be taken for a long period of time, and your doctor will be able to tell which medicine is best for your situation. Some of the prescription options that you can your doctor can discuss are Ambien, Sonata, Lunesta, and Rozerem. The first three work to keep you asleep. Rozerem is a drug that works to help you fall asleep.
Your doctor may also recommend a third class of drugs called tranquilizers. This is used in order to slow down the central nervous system, causing you to become drowsy. Drugs like Dalmane and Restoril fall into this category, but since these medications have a high risk of dependence, doctors avoid prescribing them unless the situation warrants this type of drug.
In order to stay safe taking a prescription medication for insomnia, you will want to follow all of the directions given to you by your doctor. You will also need to tell your doctor about any other medications you are taking, preexisting medical conditions, and tell your doctor at the first sign of any negative side effects so that they can be treated or you can be pulled off of one medication and put on one that would be better for you.
