Of all the different sleep related disorders, insomnia ranks the highest in terms of being the most common sleep disorder which is known to cause the patient to experience difficulty getting enough sleep and also staying asleep is a bother, and the condition can either be chronic or temporary. Though having a problem with sleeping at night occasionally is quite common and nothing to be bothered about, it is only when such problems repeat over a considerable period of time that you need to take action.

Signs And Symptoms

Some of the common signs as well as symptoms of insomnia include not being able to get adequate sleep at night, not being able to easily fall asleep at night, waking up at odd hours of the night, feeling sleepy as well as fatigued during the day and also experiencing irritability during the daytime.

Mostly, the causes of insomnia are stress, anxiety, depression, stimulants, change in environment, and extended use of sleep medications, medical problems, behavioral insomnia, snoring and overeating.

The truth of the fact is that insomnia is not in fact a disease that cannot be cured and there is one or even several insomnia cures available provided the correct diagnosis has been made and usually treatment would consist of taking medications that are commonly referred to as hypnotics and which include both Benzodiazepines as well as non-Benzodiazepines.

Also, insomnia has been noticed to increase in frequency as and when a person ages and in fact, as you age there is certain changes that will affect how much sleep you are able to get. There could be a change in your sleep pattern or a change in the activities you do and your health may also change and any or all of these changes can cause insomnia.

The good news as far as treating insomnia goes is that regardless of your age the condition can be treated and many times you will only need to make changes in your daily routine such as changing the times you wake up in the morning as well as go to sleep at night to overcome this sleep disorder. You may also need to try and limit how much time you spend in bed, and not ‘try’ and sleep because when you try too hard, it would only result in keeping you awake at night.

You can also ensure that your sleep is not disturbed by people or noises and so you need to shut your bedroom door or even have soothing background music playing that will help soothe your nerves and make you fall asleep, and in addition, you need to also control the room temperature and ensure that is comfortable and conducive to getting enough sleep. It also pays to drink a little less before turning in for the day because the need to use the bathroom in the middle of the night would be less, and so too will the chances of waking up to visit the bathroom be lesser.
