Most people take sleep for granted. Their head hits the pillow and they go right to sleep. They wake up in the morning refreshed and ready to take on the day. While this may seem like normal everyday behavior, it’s actually behavior that many people would kill to enjoy. There are some people out there for whom sleep doesn’t come as easily. These people cannot sleep no matter what they do. Counting sheep, drinking warm milk or any of the other traditional means of making one fall asleep do no good. These people suffer from chronic insomnia. When a person suffers from chronic insomnia and they cannot sleep, it interferes with their entire day. Studies have shown that people who don’t get adequate sleep lose certain brain functions, they can’t function normally, they feel fatigued and they just can’t seem to operate normally. Therefore, if you suffer from chronic insomnia, it’s time to get some help.
Sleep Specialists
You need to understand why you are suffering from chronic insomnia. Chronic insomnia is where you absolutely cannot sleep no matter what you do. You don’t feel tired at all. It’s not the same as, say, chronic fatigue insomnia, where you might feel tired but still cannot sleep. You need to find out why you’re so wired all the time and why you just cannot seem to catch some Z’s. The first thing you should do is see a sleep specialist. A sleep specialist will have you monitored in a room all by yourself. You will be hooked up to machines that will read your brain functions, your vital signs and the specialist will try to determine why you suffer from chronic insomnia.
Some Reasons
Some reasons why you may be suffering from chronic insomnia include high levels of anxiety, certain foods you’re eating, a thyroid problem, a brain injury or it could be something else entirely. Once the sleep specialist finds out why you’re suffering from chronic fatigue, he or she will then work on curing you of the problem.
Medications And Therapy
The specialist may recommend a sleep aid, such as an over the counter sleeping pill if the problem isn’t as serious as once thought. Or, he or she may prescribe something stronger, such as an anti anxiety pill or a sleeping pill of a much stronger strength. There are many ways a sleep specialist can treat your chronic insomnia, whether it’s via pharmaceutical or therapeutic means, but the specialist must first find out what’s causing the problem before he or she can move to working on treating it.
