If I see that neon blue Lunesta moth once again, my head might explode. Where’s the Geiko Gecko when you need him? One of the ways giant pharmaceutical companies make their obscenely huge profits is through advertising, such as the incredibly successful Lunesta prescription medication for insomnia. They make such incredibly elaborate advertising campaigns to justify the outrageous costs of any new insomnia medication.

What About The Over The Counter Stuff?

There have been sleeping pills available over the counter in America for decades – although they are considered illegal to sell over the counter in England. But sleeping pills such as Sominex or Unisom are filled with much different medication that prescription medication for insomnia. Basically, over the counter sleeping pills are Nyquil. That’s it. You might as well just chug Nyquil, for all the good it will do.

Over the counter sleeping pills can help once in a while and once in a while only. Nyquil certainly provides a needed relief for people with such bad congestion that it hurts more to lay down than to sit up, making sleeping impossible. But if you wake up in the middle in the night and can’t get back to sleep, then you would need prescription medication for insomnia.

Does My Insurance Cover This?

Prescription medication for insomnia is very expensive. Lunesta, for example, is more than $4 (US) per tablet. Not all health insurance companies will cover prescription medication for insomnia because they do not consider it “necessary” medication. If you don’t have medical insurance, then you must fork out all of the costs yourself. There are some generic forms of prescription medication for insomnia (such as a generic for Ambien) but so far there is no generic for Lunesta.

What’s The Worst That Can Happen?

No matter what the advertisements say, you can become addicted to any prescription medicine for insomnia. You have to have the willpower to only use the medicines for a few days and then stop cold turkey. Hopefully, the medicine will have helped you developed new sleep and diet habits that are beneficial to getting a good night’s sleep. If you haven’t tried to change your ways, then you are screwed.

The worst that can happen is that your body forgets how to naturally become drowsy. It is like a muscle that atrophies. You would become dependant on expensive chemicals to wake you up and then knock you out.
