Treatments for Pulsating Tinnitus
December 20th, 2009    Subscribe To Our FeedPulsating, pulsatile, vascular or objective tinnitus only refers to one thing – the ringing sound on your ear. This may be caused by many conditions affecting the ears, veins or arteries. These are chronic inflammation or infection, Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD), middle ear fluids, vascular tumors, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), carotid artery-cavernous sinus fistula and venous hum. There are also various treatments and steps you could take to address this type of tinnitus.
It is of utmost importance to know the root cause of the tinnitus you are suffering from before doing any major action. If your middle ear is infected, that could be chronic inflammation. Along with this is a stronger flow of blood to the affected tissues in the ear. If your ears pop whenever you are riding an airplane or are moving in an elevated area and there is pain accompanied with the popping, then that is Eustachian tube dysfunction.
Another cause of tinnitus is middle ear fluids. At a normal state, air is filled within the middle portion of the ear. If other areas of the ear are infected, the fluids may flow to the middle area which ultimately causes hearing loss, pressure sensation, and tinnitus. Venous hum is common for people who are either anemic or pregnant, and people with thyroid problems can also experience this. These conditions increase the jugular vein’s flow of blood. The blood supplication of the heart to the brain is made possible by this vein. Since it passes through the middle ear, it can create humming sounds during stronger blood flows.
Grave cases involve, as mentioned, vascular tumors. They are not quite cancerous, but can cause increased pressure of blood flow in to the ear, causing pulsating tinnitus. This can be caused by some sort of physical trauma or abnormal development while in the womb. The carotid artery-cavernous sinus fistula is an abnormal “lake” connection between large arteries and large veins inside the cranial cavity. This is usually the result of severe trauma to the head.
The many causes of pulsating tinnitus call for various treatments. Usually, medications are administered to address it. Some of the medications that are prescribed by doctors are antibiotics, decongestants, eardrops, ear sprays, and nasal steroids.
Surgical treatments are doled out to patients who have severe tinnitus as caused by other diseases or disorders. Low-light laser therapy is one surgical treatment for light-based tinnitus. The fistula condition resulting to pulsating tinnitus may be the only serious disorder that could be treated with non-surgical procedure. This only requires interventional service of a radiologist. Electrical stimulation could also be applied to the nerves, head or auditory cortex through electrode implantation.
Other treatments for pulsating tinnitus that do not involve surgery to take note of are natural remedies like Paul carrington’s Banish Tinnitus (check out a full Banish Tinnitus Review here for details). These could be methods for early correction, therapies, meditation, biofeedback, and herbal medicines. Possibly the most popular of these is cognitive behavioral therapy, which is particularly useful for cases of tinnitus whose root cause is based on psychological factors.
The tinnitus retraining therapy is through a combination of counseling and external sound therapy. The combination aims reduction of tinnitus symptoms. Patients who indulge in this therapy are aided in how to deal with the tinnitus. Sometimes, the patients are minimally exposed to external sounds like white noise or music with low pitch or in low decibels. The external sounds actually help veil the tinnitus.
