The Alomo: Impassioned series of events leading up to the legendary 1836 siege in San Antonio, Texas. A more precise rendition than earlier renderings of the tale, it still battles to handle the numerous elements of this historical occurrence. The Painted Veil: In 1925 London, a socially backward bacteriologist hastily solicits an appealing lady to wed him, and she concurs. While he sees that she’s been cheating, he forces her to go along with him to a remote outpost in China where there’s been an eruption of cholera. Albeit meant as punishment, this experience steadily changes and deepens their relation. Cast includes Naomi Watts, Edward Norton, Liev Schreiber, and Toby Jones. (125 minutes, 2006)

The Bullfighters: One of more superior Laural and Hardy later works, engaging false identity as Stan is a lookalike for renowned matador. Things really get funny when Stan is thrown in with the bull. Cast includes Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, Margo Woode, Richard Aisle, and Carol Andrews. (61 minutes, 1945)

Days of Glory: Moving (and illuminating) fable of North African cadets who joined their French brothers in battle throughout WW2 even thougth they were on no account acknowledged as equals. The film is constructed on a time worn recipe of following raw initiates as they become stiffened battle Heros by concentrating on a handful of men and personalizing their tale. This film brings this forgotten chapter of history comes to lucid life. Cast includes Jamel Debbouze, Samy Naceri, Roschdy Zem, Sami Bouajila, Bernard Blancan, Mathieu Simonet, Benoit Giros, Melanie Laurent, and Antoine Chappey. (120 minutes, 2006)

Murderous Maids: A new take on the infamous 1933 murder case that rocked most of France. Christine Papin (Testud) and her younger sibling Lea, like their mommy before them, work as house maids. However, Christine’s simmering resentment of her mom, her circumstance, and her administrators starts to wear on her in assorted damaging ways. Cast includes Sylvie Testud, Julie-Marie Parmentier, Isabelle Renauld, Jean-Gabriel Nordmann, and Marie Donnio. (94 minutes, 2000)
