Cartoon and comic drawings are the same as other type of realistic illustrating using pencil, pen or brush; they require skill. If you’ve tried draw cartoons and you don’t’ feel that they visually appealing, consider learning the basics of drawing first.

Just like with any drawing medium, it’s helpful to understand perspective and proportional space to accurately depict the size of objects and their relation to each other. Learning shading as it pertains to the three dimensional effect on an object is helpful. You want to captures an object’s shape gradually with as few lines a possible.

The beautiful thing about drawing a cartoon is that while there should be a degree of reality for human and animal anatomy, the artist doesn’t have to be exact; there is freedom for creative exaggeration of the animated characters features.

You want the personality of the cartoon character to stand out and be easily understood. The cartoon artist will do this by drawing universally understood facial expressions for joy, fear, and disgust etc. Using simple lines, the artist should be able to depict things like motion, heat, or danger to the reader.

You want to identify as much as possible about your characters in the illustration, so that you have less to explain in the written word. A character’s traits will be summed up with specific attributes and attitudes you want the characters to convey.

If you are new to drawing, I would recommend that you learn drawing basic beforehand. This will help you to better utilize the whole frame. The more you draw, the more your images with become transformed to your liking. Whether you are experienced with drawing or just beginning, it will take time to hone you skills for drawing cartoons. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again!
