Joe Dirt wasn’t loved by critics. It generally averaged 3 out of 10. Roger Ebert and his partner Richard Roeper both gave the movie a resounding thumbs down. They didn’t like anything about it. However, they did complement Spade’s performance.
It earned over $25 million in the US market. Joe Dirt made money. Its budget was only $16 million. It also made it to number one in New Zealand. Some of the stars quipped that New Zealand was smaller than WalMart. Dennis Miller has a radio show where he frequently talks about the movie. He’s even interviewed David Spade about it.
Joe Dirt is a custodian at a radio station. A producer discovers Joe and his funny white trash habits. He decides to create a series of interviews for Joe. The movie is Joe telling his story.
Joe Dirt tries to get the attention of Brandy. Joe decides to try to find his parents after Brandy loses her dog. He begins a journey across America. He does a lot of weird things. He meets some weird people. He also takes on many odd jobs. The last of these is his job in the boiler room of the radio station.
Joe Dirt finally decides to return to Brandy. He finds out that she knows that his parents were killed while he was visiting the Grand Canyon. His search was useless.
Joe Dirt has become popular with listeners. He’s become a media sensation. His mother, supposedly, calls him. She’s trying to use him. She’s trying to sell figurines using his name. Both she and his father want to get rich off of him.
At the end of the movie Joe Dirt tries to commit suicide by jumping off a bridge. He’s saved by a bungee cord. But he hits his head on the way back up. The people he met on his journey stay with him until he wakes up. He has finally found a family. That’s not much of a plot. That’s why critics didn’t like it.
Joe Dirt is proof that Hollywood is desperate for good movies.
