"To Mount or Not To Mount?" - That is the question!
Tuesday, April 7th, 2009    Subscribe To Our FeedOne of the first decisions you will have to make after purchasing a Plasma TV is whether you should mount it on the wall or just buy a orthodox Glass TV Stand. Obviously mounting it on the wall will make you look more impressive and will also be a vocal point of discussion for visitors. It will also make you look a lot more adept at home improvement as visitors will ask questions such as “how DID you manage to get it to stay on the wall?” However the fuss and potentially calamitous accidents that could occur from mounting it incorrectly could cause some unneeded trauma.
The safer option is to buy a TV stand which could probably work out cheaper. If you are undecided however take look at the processes for each, this should help you decide.
So you've got a snazzy, slimline Plasma or LCD TV back from the shop, you've torn the packaging off with impatient excitement and now you want to get it above the fireplace as soon as possible. So here’s what do you..
Wall Mounting
1.Buy a wall mounting kit [obvious]. If you’ve recently purchased a Plasma TV you may be questioning whether you should mount it on the wall or just buy an orthodox Glass TV Stand.
2. Ensure it fits, else you will waste time and make unnecessary holes in your walls.
3. Make sure the studs go in the wall.
4. Measure everything before you start to drill and check that there are no pipes in the walls, else you will need a plumber.
5. You need a hole behind the TV and a hole where the wires will come out. You then need to feed the wire through with a hanger or something similar. Remember if you don’t tidy the cabling away, you will look like an “amateur TV wall mounter”
6. Fix the TV to the mounting gear, may need two people to do this.
7. Make sure everything works ok and test that it is all attached.
TV Stands
This is much easier but less impressive.
1. Buy a stand that can hold the size and weight of your TV. Also make sure it has enough shelves for other AV equipment.
2. A task alien to most self respecting males….read the assembly instructions
3. Put your television on the stand.
4. Suddenly becoming a lover of nature documentaries that were filmed in HD.
